Accreditation schemes
A number of local authorities have administered anti-bullying
accreditation schemes to schools as a way of promoting best
practice in preventing and responding to bullying. Schools
will typically be provided with a list of policies and practices
that they need to adopt and be asked to provide evidence to the
authority. Once they have provided this evidence, the local
authority can reward the school with accreditation or
certification. Some local authorities have administered the
scheme with a Gold/Silver/Bronze scale to encourage
ongoing participation from schools and reward schools for their
varying degrees of activity and involvement. Local
authorities can choose to publically acknowledge those schools who
have accreditation through award giving ceremonies or through the
local media.
Local authorities have found this an invaluable way of engaging
all schools in anti-bullying work and also promoting other services
either within the authority or through voluntary agencies who can
offer the school additional support.
