It is vital that students, parents and carers know who to contact if they have a complaint about bullying.

If the complaint relates to bullying in school then the first step should be for the parent or carer to follow the school complaints procedure.

Section 29 of the Education Act 2002 states that:

(1) The governing body of a maintained school shall—

(a) establish procedures for dealing with all complaints relating to the school or to the provision of facilities or services under section 27, other than complaints falling to be dealt with in accordance with any procedures required to be established in relation to the school by virtue of a statutory provision other than this section, and

(b) publicise the procedures so established

Once this route has been exhausted we would recommend that parents and carers contact their local authority to see if they can offer assistance.

If the local authority is unable to assist we would recommend that parents and carers contact Ofsted, their local MP, or the Department for Education.

The Advisory Centre for Education and the Children's Legal Centre are able to offer advice to parents and carers on making a complaint and all legal matters relating to education.
