Involving Children and Young People

Children and young people need to be involved in both policy and strategy development, and also in the process of monitoring, review and evaluation.

There are a number of ways this has successfully been achieved in local authorities. For example through:

• Young people’s advisory groups
• Youth parliaments / youth councils / youth forums
• School councils
• Young people’s discussion pages (on website)
• Questionnaires/surveys/focus groups/ research (preferably designed and carried out by young people)
• Conferences for children and young people

The evidence and impact of this involvement should be used to inform the local authority inspection process.
